Dear Senior Academy Members,
We are in the midst of winter with the prospect for it to last several weeks longer according to the ground hog’s prediction. And yet, in February the days grow noticeably longer, Valentine’s Day provides an opportunity to remember and celebrate the importance of love in our lives, and in this year those of us who are past the conventional retirement age have been able to receive the vaccinations that protect against COVID-19—in my view altogether positive developments that point toward the promise of spring.
When it was my turn to sign up for the vaccine shots, I was pleasantly surprised how easy it was to do and utterly delighted about how efficient and friendly the procedure itself was in an atmosphere of grateful excitement among patients, volunteers, nurses, and pharmacists involved in the experience. If you are willing to share your experience we invite you to do so with a short story or telling picture, we would like to add it to the “Voices of Senior Academy”, in part to call attention to your participation in the vaccination effort as models for those of the campus community, faculty, staff, and students, who may be uncertain and hesitating about getting the vaccines for themselves.
Sometimes there is a monthly theme to the Senior Academy events, and in February, it is a big one: The question of Where to Live? is of interest to many people at different stages at their lives but maybe especially to those who consider, plan for, or experience retirement from full-time employment. Christy Tidwell, immediate past president, has organized a very interesting series of three presentations that begins to explore particular questions of this very large topic. If you have not yet registered for the events, you can do so easily on the Senior Academy website, https://senioracademy.iupui.edu/Events. Christy also prepared a list of resources to accompany the series — it is available via this link.
I hope you will join the conversation and I invite you to suggest other topics that fall under this theme. You can do so virtually during the next Social Hour on February 19, 2021, from 3-4 p.m.. When you register for the Social Hour, you will receive the Zoom link for the event. You can also participate in the discussion in writing, adding your perspective, experience, and insights to the “Voices of Senior Academy,” by clicking “Contact Info” under the “About” tab of the website to submit your questions, suggestions, and contributions.
As you may have noticed, the Senior Academy is relying very much more on its website for all different kinds of communication and connections. In part a reflection of general developments in digital messaging broadly defined, in part adjustments and innovations in response to the restrictions of the pandemic that the university created and put in place. Developing the website, especially the Member Center, is an ongoing project that could not happen without the continued support of the Office of Academic Affairs, for which we are very grateful, in particular the assistance of Mansi Singh and Chad Beckner. May I encourage you to visit the website and make frequent and good use of it https://senioracademy.iupui.edu/! You can also contact me directly (ude[dot]iupui[at]kcekowm; 317 332 8488).
May you be safe and healthy!
