If you currently receive email at your iupui.edu or iupuc.edu account, your email address will change to iu.edu. Help is coming! APRIL EVENTS: April 9 – String Theory : Knitters and crocheters meet the second Tuesday of every month to create hats and scarves for needy clients of local clinics and social service organizations. For more information, contact retroP ykceB. April 11 – Senior Academy Board of Directors Meeting: All Senior Academy members are invited to observe meetings of the board, either in person or on Zoom. April 12 – Indiana Libraries and Literacy Symposium: Volunteers needed to fill swag bags, direct participants, pass out prizes, and similar tasks. To volunteer, contact ecnarF anyhC. April 16 – Travel Group: The Travel Group meets every third Tuesday at 10 a.m. on Zoom. Watch your email for information, or contact relliM aigroeG. The Travel Group is planning an outing to the Eiteljorg in May, in addition to monthly meetings about travel-related topics proposed by members. April 17 – SA Book Club: April’s book club selection is Jhumpa Lahiri’s Interpreter of Maladies. We meet over Zoom from 11 a.m. to 12 noon. Discussions are always lively! April 18 – Volunteer Group: Senior Academy members will again have the opportunity to volunteer in a shoe sorting event at the Carmel location of Changing Footprints on Thursday, April 18, 2024, from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. We will be sorting and boxing used shoes, which will go to nonprofit organizations for their clients in need. Please register for the event here. April 30 – Meet and Greet: Mark your calendar for a Meet and Greet event at Hoosier Village (9891 Purple Plum Lane, Indianapolis) from 2 to 4 p.m. on April 30. We meet in the Marketing Building; ask for directions at the entrance gate. May 15 – Book Club: Aomawa Shield’s memoir, Life on Other Planets: A Memoir of Finding My Place in the Universe, is the featured book. As a young, Black, female student in a STEM field, Shields was discouraged from pursuing an astrophysics degree. She forged a successful career as a model before a day job at NASA lured her back into a PhD program, where she was the oldest and only Black student in the cohort. Now she researches planets beyond our solar system, looking for those that might support life. Register for the Zoom link to discuss this inspiring book.
