January 17 – Senior Academy Book Club: Francia Kissel leads discussion of David Grann’s Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI, published in 2017. The film adaptation, directed by Martin Scorsese, was released in October to great acclaim. The SA Book Club meets online from 11 a.m. to 12 noon; you are welcome to invite non-SA friends to attend. January 23 – Zoom session: “Treasures from the Lilly Library.” Colleen Kuhn, President of the Portfolio Club in Indianapolis, will take attendees on a virtual tour of the collections of Lilly Library on the Bloomington campus. Kuhn, who holds 3 IU degrees including an Art History degree from IUPUI, will present historical information about the Lilly Library. Then, she will show us some of the treasures housed in the library, including rare books and manuscripts, art objects, and more. In this photo, Kuhn holds John Ford’s Best Director Oscar awarded for Grapes of Wrath in 1940. The Zoom session lasts from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Register to get the link. January 25 – Changing Footprints: Volunteer coordinator Steve Kirchhoff announces another volunteer opportunity at Changing Footprints, a group that distributes good quality used shoes worldwide. Senior Academy members can sign up for the noon to 2 p.m. shift on Thursday, January 25, at Changing Footprints in Carmel. Register here. February 11 – Nominations due for the 2024 Last Lecture. Senior Academy members are invited to submit nominations for the 2024 Last Lecture, using the online nomination portal. This is your chance to recommend an outstanding speaker from among your colleagues; those eligible are all current or retired staff members, faculty, or administrators. The process is simple: provide a letter of justification for your nomination and a current CV for the speaker. The letter should list your reasons and enough relevant details to enable the committee to choose a speaker. Deadline for nominations is midnight February 11. Severns, JD, a Certified Elder Attorney with more than 35 years of experience, will present a scenario-based webcast for those who may become executors or who may need executors. February 21 – SA Book Club: The February book club selection is Salman Rushdie’s Victory City. Register to get the Zoom link. Victory City, a New York Times bestseller and one of Time magazine’s books of the year, is a rollicking but cautionary tale about a kingdom’s failure to live up to its pluralistic ideal. The plot is loosely based on the history of the real city Vijayanagara, the richest city in India in the 15th and 16th centuries. February 28 – Speaker Camy Broeker: Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration Camy Broeker will address questions about the transition from IUPUI to Indiana University Indianapolis and Purdue University in Indianapolis. This is a hybrid event, with concurrent in-person and streaming options. The in-person event is from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on February 28 in Campus Center Room CE 307. Membership notes: For Annual Members – For those who pay Senior Academy dues by the calendar year (due in January), your renewal date will now occur in July. If you are in this group of members, you will receive an individual letter explaining the change. For Lifetime Members – If you have not registered for the Senior Academy Member Directory, please do so by signing in to the Member Center, then choosing the Academy Members Directory tab (figure 1). Adding your name to the Directory ensures delivery of your newsletters and other email to your preferred address. Also, sign up to indicate your interests in special group activities (figure 2).
