December 14 – Holiday Gathering: Celebrate the season with friends at the Senior Academy Holiday Gathering on December 14 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Indy’s Global Village Welcome Center (4233 Lafayette Road). Join us as we mingle, enjoy heavy hors d’oeuvres, and visit the galleries and collections of this festive venue that brings together world cultures. December’s featured exhibits include the World of Trees and a Native American Heritage exhibit. Register online by December 3, if paying by credit card. Cost is $26.00 per person. December 20 – Senior Academy Book Club: Craig McDaniel leads discussion of Pádraig Ó Tuama’s Poetry Unbound: 50 Poems to Open Your World. The book club meets each third Thursday on Zoom from 11 a.m. to 12 noon. Register to get the Zoom link. Year-end Philanthropy: As you make year-end gifts to your favorite charities, you might consider the Senior Academy funds. Three separate funds provide scholarships to students who might otherwise not be eligible. In addition, the Senior Academy General Endowment Fund supports the ongoing work of the Academy year-round. LOOKING AHEAD TO 2024January 17 – Senior Academy Book Club: Francia Kissel leads discussion of David Grann’s Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI, published in 2017. The film adaptation, directed by Martin Scorsese, was released in October to great acclaim. The SA Book Club meets online from 11 a.m. to 12 noon; you are welcome to invite non-SA friends to attend. January 23 – “Treasures from the Lilly Library”: In this Zoom session lasting from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Colleen Kuhn, President of the Portfolio Club in Indianapolis, will present little-known information about the treasures in The Lilly Library on the campus of Indiana University in Bloomington. There are world masterpieces of literature, music, and so much more! You may register to attend here. February 15 – “Do You Have the Right Executor? Avoiding Risks, Unnecessary Expense, and Family Strife”: Scott R. Severns, JD, a Certified Elder Attorney who has practiced elder law for 35 years, will present a scenario-based webcast for those who may become executors or who may need executors. The online program, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., is co-sponsored by United Way’s Always United and by Senior Academy. Look for registration details coming soon! February 21 – SA Book Club: The February book club selection is Salman Rushdie’s Victory City. Register to get the Zoom link. February 28 – Speaker Camy Broeker: Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration Camy Broeker will address questions about the transition from IUPUI to Indiana University Indianapolis and Purdue University in Indianapolis. This is a hybrid event, with concurrent in-person and streaming options. The in-person event is from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on February 28, in Campus Center Room CE 307.
