Don’t miss the big party, IUPUI Senior Academy’s 30th Anniversary Celebration!You are invited to the party, a festive celebration on Thursday October 5, 2023 from 2 to 4 p.m. in the IUPUI Campus Center, Room 450. Doors open at 2 p.m. for a reception, with the program beginning at 2:45. Wear your IUPUI gear proudly, or if you prefer, dress up for the occasion! The celebration will recognize the founding of the IUPUI Senior Academy in 1993 and its members’ legacy of support for IUPUI and the community through its 30-year history. As part of the program, Dr. Kathy Johnson, Executive Vice Chancellor, Chief Academic Officer, and Professor of Psychology at IUPUI, will be presented the 2023 Gerald L. Bepko Community Medallion award. Free parking is available in the Campus Center Vermont Street Garage. Registration is optional, but you may preregister at this link. OCTOBER AND NOVEMBER EVENTS:October 9 – IUPUI walking tour: Join SA members on a 30th anniversary celebratory walk-about of the IUPUI campus. Student Ambassadors will lead us on a 45-minute “Four Corners” campus tour. Meet on the lower level of the Campus Center at 11:45 a.m. Upon check-in, you will receive a parking pass for the Vermont Garage. Register online. October 10 – String Theory: Join knitters and crocheters at 4:30 p.m. on October 10 to create warm weather gear for needy folks. Register to see details. October 18 – Book Club: Jean Robertson leads discussion of The Lion House: The Coming of a King, an engrossing history of Suleyman the Magnificent, 16th-century sultan of the Ottoman empire. Note: So you can read ahead, the November book club selection is Nicole Eustace’s Covered with Night: A Story of Murder and Indigenous Justice in Early America. October 20 – Volunteer with us at Exodus Refugee Immigration: Senior Academy members will sort and process clothing and household goods in the Exodus warehouse on East Washington Street from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on October 20. The lifting duties are light, and there are sitting jobs available. Exodus helps resettle new refugees and their families, as well as human trafficking victims, asylees, and other displaced people. November 11 – Spirit and Place Festival: Join Senior Academy at our Spirit and Place session called “Quiet as a Gateway.” Guided by practitioners of different faiths and an art therapist, this event invites guests to feel the power of quiet through dialogue, practice, and art-making activities. The program is presented as a partnership with Indianapolis First Friends Meeting on Saturday, November 11, 3 – 5 p.m., at the First Friends Main Meeting Room.
