APRIL EVENTS: Protect Yourself: Senior Fraud – April 20th from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (online). Always United teams up with Senior Academy to present a virtual program on how to avoid scams that target seniors. Fraud prevention specialists from the FBI and First Merchants Bank will speak. You must register with Eventbrite to get the link. String Theory – Knitters and crocheters can put their crafting skills to use in fashioning cold-weather accessories which will be donated to the needy next fall. String theory meets April 11th from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Register to get location details. Read a book with Senior Academy – The book club meets online on April 19th from 11 a.m. to 12 noon to discuss Anthony Doerr’s Pulitzer Prize-winning WW II novel, All the Light We Cannot See. Volunteer at Crooked Creek Food Pantry – Senior Academy members will be lending a hand at Crooked Creek Food Pantry on Thursday, April 27th from 9:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The food pantry is located inside the Eskenazi Health Center Pecar at 6940 N. Michigan Road. Volunteers will be sorting and loading food. Register to help.
MAY EVENTS: Mini University 2023 – Early Bird Registration ends May 1. See the Alumni Association website for registration details, as well as a list of the 50+ classes offered on the Bloomington campus June 11 – 16. Spring Wine-Tasting – Giles Hoyt and Bill Schneider are coordinating a wine-sampling event focused on European wines for spring on May 4th from 4 to 5:30 p.m. The location is The Wine Spot, Payless Liquors, 9520 Upland Dr., Indianapolis, 46256. Wine expert Tom Fields will present and discuss the wines, while chef Joseph Heidenriech will create hors d’oeuvres to complement the wines. The cost is $40.00 per person (payment is due during registration). Register by April 30th. Plant Swap – Senior Academy members are invited to the Northern Estates Homeowners Association plant swap on May 6th, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The meeting place is 4270 Melbourne Road East Drive, Indianapolis, 46228; park on the street. You can bring seeds, starts, plants, pots, or whatever you have to trade. String Theory – May 9th, 4:30 – 6 p.m. Register here. Eagle Creek Park Litter Clean-up – Wednesday, May 10th, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Senior Academy will partner with Always United (United Way’s 50+ organization) to clean up Eagle Creek Park, 7840 W. 56th Street, Indianapolis. Register to help. Book Club – In May, we read Nineteen Eighty-four with Craig McDaniel leading the discussion. Join us online on May 17th from 11 a.m. to 12 noon. Register to get the Zoom link.
JUNE EVENTS: First walk of the summer – Join the Walking Group, led by Gabrielle Bovenzi, on a hike June 7th in the morning. Details will be announced soon. Annual Meeting – Mark your calendar for the Senior Academy Annual Meeting at Eagle Creek Park on June 15th at 11:30 a.m. Executive Vice Chancellor Emeritus William Plater will be the featured speaker. Plater was instrumental in founding Senior Academy 30 years ago.
RED-LETTER DATE! Senior Academy’s 30th Anniversary Celebration – Circle the date on your calendar now—October 5th in the Campus Center. This grand event will celebrate the achievements of Senior Academy over 3 decades, will honor the Bepko Medallion recipient (to be named), and will culminate with a big thank you to the IUPUI campus community.
