Plenty of exciting Senior Academy events are coming up in October and November, so take out your red pencils and circle these dates.
Programs
- Join us for the first-ever Senior Academy Fall Social on Wednesday, October 19, 2022, from 2 to 4 p.m., at the Indianapolis Healthplex Sports Complex, 3600 Guion Road. The program will feature Senior Academy highlights and a short presentation on maintaining senior health, followed by refreshments and time for socializing. Register for the Social.
- This year’s Last Lecture featuring Dr. Sherry Queener takes place on Friday, November 4, 2022, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Campus Center Theater, 420 University Boulevard. Queener is professor emerita of pharmacology and toxicology in the School of Medicine and former associate dean of the IU Graduate School. In Dr. Queener’s reflection on life lessons, “Fighting Fair,” she examines strategies to turn conflict into productive action. Register to attend The Last Lecture.
- “Looking Forward: Black Indianapolis Artists Imagine the Future,” a panel discussion by contemporary African American artists, is on Saturday, November 5, 2022, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The program is part of the 2022 Spirit and Place Festival and is co-sponsored by Senior Academy and Herron School of Art + Design. The discussion is in Basile Auditorium, 735 West New York Street, on the IUPUI campus. Participants may also tour the galleries to view artworks that address the legacy of slavery and the continuing fight for civil rights. No pre-registration is necessary.
- Senior Academy will host an on-campus watch party to view the webinar “The Psychology of Retirement,” presented by IU Human Resources, on November 11 from 12 to 1:30 p.m. HR staff will be on hand for individual questions. The on-campus location will be announced soon, but if you wish to watch the webinar from home, register to get connection details.
- Save the date! IUPUI Senior Academy’s Holiday Luncheon will be on Thursday, December 1, 2022 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Courses Restaurant (Penthouse floor), Ivy Tech Culinary Center, 2820 N. Meridian St. Registration will open soon, so watch for an invitation with a link.
Online Events
- The Senior Academy Book Club discusses Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Anne Applebaum’s 2020 book The Twilight of Democracy: The Seductive Lure of Authoritarianism on October 12 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Register to get the Zoom link for this sure-to-be-engrossing discussion.
- Webinars in IU Human Resources’ Road to Retirement series, covering financial, medical, and psychological dimensions to consider during your retirement years, are presented on these upcoming dates: October 4 and 12, November 11 and 17, and December 2. Involvement Opportunities
- String Theory meets in a member’s home to knit and crochet winter hats and scarves for donation to local homeless shelters. The next meeting is Tuesday, October 11, from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. You may also participate on Zoom. Register for String Theory at Events: IUPUI Senior Academy: IUPUI.
- The IUPUI United Way Silent Auction is on Wednesday, October 26, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Campus Center Atrium. Online bidding starts Monday, October 24. Senior Academy is contributing a gift basket themed “Retirement Fun;” other themed baskets include a hygge basket, an Explore Indy basket, a lighthouse basket, and a roadside assistance basket.
- Help ease hunger in the community by volunteering with Senior Academy at Crooked Creek Food Pantry, 6940 N. Michigan Rd., Ste. 160 (inside Eskenazi Health) on Wednesday, November 2, from 9:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. We will load client cars with food bags. Register to help with the food pantry project.
- To stay up to date on all the volunteering and mentoring opportunities that come our way, be sure to register your interests in the Senior Academy Member Center. First, log into the Member Center using your CAS ID; next, click the tab labeled “What Are Your Interests?”. Then select from among the several interest categories, including Mentoring, Volunteering, and Supporting the Academy. Sherry Queener (ude[dot]iupui[at]seneeuq) matches volunteers with formal mentoring programs that need professional expertise, Steve Kirchhoff (ude[dot]ui[at]ohhcriks) arranges service opportunities in the community.
