Late Summer Activities and Events
Although Senior Academy activities kick into high gear in the fall, interest groups are looking forward to several upcoming events in late summer.
- Interested in walking, but with a cultural flavor? Two upcoming walks are August 3 at 9:30 a.m. at the Virginia Fairbanks Art and Nature Park 100 Acres, and September 7 at 9:30 a.m. on River Road along the White River. Leader Gabrielle Bovenzi sets a leisurely pace, as the goal is part exercise, part sightseeing. Register at Events: IUPUI Senior Academy: IUPUI.
- What about a jazz concert under the stars? Folks from the Outdoor Activities Interest Group are meeting August 18 at 7 p.m. to hear the Indianapolis Jazz Orchestra at MacAllister Amphitheater in Garfield Park. Bring lawn chairs. Register to let us know you are coming to the event. If you would like to help plan further Outdoor Activities events, contact Russell Vertner (moc[dot]oohay[at]rentrevr).
- Interest in needle crafts with a philanthropic twist? The String Theory group meets the second Tuesday of each month at 4:30 p.m. to knit and crochet cold weather gear, donated to charities such as Wheeler Mission and Paws Pantry. Register for String Theory gatherings at Events: IUPUI Senior Academy: IUPUI.
- The popular Senior Academy Book Club starts up again in August. Julie Otsuka’s short novel The Swimmers is the choice for August 17th from 11 a.m. to noon. Registration is now open. This book club remains an online discussion, to accommodate all those readers who cannot attend in-person events.
- The next two book discussions are slated for September 14th and October 12th, so mark your calendars. Sign up to receive Zoom information by email. Book club members have chosen an interesting mix of books for next year. Volunteers lead the book discussions and Marianne Wokeck organizes the book club.
Fall Plans
The new Senior Academy Board of Directors, under Georgia Miller’s leadership as Senior Academy board president, is finalizing fall plans. Look for these exciting upcoming events:
- Campus Campaign: yes, you receive an appeal to contribute to Campus Campaign every year, but this fall, your letter will feature Senior Academy’s three scholarship funds!
- Spirit and Place: Senior Academy is partnering with Herron School of Art + Design for a presentation inspired by Herron’s exhibition, "Complicated Stories—The Afterlives of Slavery." While the exact date has not been confirmed, Spirit and Place Festival in 2022 is November 3–13.
- Last Lecture: this popular on-campus event is slated for November 4, 2022.
Keep an eye out for more fall events, including a webinar from IU Foundation on planned giving, a session on retirement finances, a follow-up to the photo identification workshop last March, and plans to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Senior Academy in 2023.
Don’t Forget!
