Dear Senior Academy Members,
April is a particularly busy month in the academic calendar, and this year it also included observations and celebrations of Passover, Easter, and Ramadan, as well as spring break for children and their parents and grandparents. As it turned out it was Senior Academy event-heavy at the beginning of the month with no programming offered at its end.
As the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions are being eased on campus and in the community, more of the programs took place in person. The photo collection workshop that the university archivist Stephen Towne and Bill Schneider organized was a success. It was fun and sometimes a challenge to identify colleagues and friends and events in photos that were taken decades ago—reminders of times and people that marked the campus and have shaped it. Not surprising, there were several voices that urged making this kind of workshop a recurring event, a next one likely taking place sometime in the fall.
The Mind’s I project of the Herron School of Art and Design for which the Senior Academy was co-sponsor brought prominent exposure to the Academy. It also served as a reminder of how important and accessible to the public exhibits of different kinds of visual art are as a prominent part of the campus and its culture of diversity. You may want to subscribe to the school’s newsletter to be informed about its events and exhibits.
It rained on the campus tour but that did not dampen the event that for me had Innovation Hall as its highlight because it demonstrates the collaborative and entrepreneurial spirit of IUPUI—across units and involving faculty, staff, and students with wide-ranging impact on the local community and far beyond.
For those of you who follow IUPUI’s sports teams and athletics, you may already know that the Jaguar’s website provides you with information and schedules. You may not know that Athletic Director Roderick Perry was named NACDA 2021-22 Cushman & Wakefield AD of the Year in March, just a few days after he reported about sports and student athletes to the Senior Academy.
As the academic year 2022-2023 is winding down, with finals in the first week of May and commencement on the 14th of the month, most of the activities of the Senior Academy will take advantage of gathering out of doors during spring. All of the
Interest Groups are active, with the
Walking Group resuming its monthly meetings, the
String Theory Group getting together in person, possibly crocheting and knitting outside, and the final meeting of the
Book Club may take place in the garden of one of its members. Please note that all meetings of the Interests Groups, including those that are organized around particular volunteering opportunities and events, are posted on the Senior Academy website under
upcoming events.
If you are interested in one or more of the Interest Groups, you have to take two steps:
join the Senior Academy and then create your profile. After those two steps you can log into the
Member Center. If you have not yet taken those steps, let me encourage you to do so and connect with colleagues and friends. And remember that the Senior Academy always welcomes guests.
Please mark your calendars for joining me at the
Annual Meeting on Thursday, June 2, 2022, 11 a.m.–1 p.m. It will take place in Eagle Creek Park (Shelter A). Like last year when COVID-19 pandemic restrictions were more firmly in place, we will finalize the vote of the 2022-2023 board members and officers, hear the 2021-2022 report, and appreciate each other’s company and conversation while enjoying box lunches.
